Monday Musings | Reading Habits #3 – To Bookmark or Not to Bookmark?

When I was younger, I never ever used bookmarks. I was secretly very proud of my abilities to either find my page really quickly or remember the page I was on. I loved flexing my memory and reveling in the fact that I didn’t need to mark my spot.

But lately I haven’t been feeling the same satisfaction. When I don’t have anything to mark my page (whether it be a sticky note, old receipt, or any random thing I can find around me), I feel mildly frustrated. I’m not sure if it’s because my memory is declining (yikes!) or if I’m more worried about spoilers nowadays, but having some kind of bookmark has become almost essential when I read. That being said, I’m severely lacking in the cute bookmark game, which makes me think I should go shopping…

What about you? Do you find bookmarks essential when you read, or do you simply remember the page you’re on? Do you have a favourite bookmark? Have your bookmark habits changed over time?

I’ve always used bookmarks. There have been times when my book would close without anything marking my spot and it frustrates me to have to find my spot again.

I always use a bookmark, although more often than not it’s just an index card or a hold slip. I don’t do the cute bookmark thing because I’d lose them. If I don’t have anything with me to hold my place I have to (*gulp*) dog-ear the page. I know! I’m a monster!

I never used to be a bookmark person either. I used to DOGEAR! And then I stopped that, I needed something to mark my page – it ended up being spare bits of ribbon, bookstore bookmarks, receipts – basically whatever was at hand. I currently have TWO bookmarks and they are lovely. Although I do find that occasionally the top will get caught on something else in my bag and slip out. Powell’s has really nice bookmarks – I’m sure you could peruse online.

I used to dog-ear too! Although I love cute bookmarks, I usually leave them in books that I’ve already finished so more often than not I use a makeshift bookmark (ie. anything I can find in my backpack). I want to start using cute ones though! I’ll have to take a look at Powell’s site.

I always use a bookmark. And, I have used so many different things. If it’s a library book, I often use the paper slip that also reminds me when the book is due. I have also been known to rip pieces of paper out of just about anything if I am in need of a bookmark right away. But my favourites are the ones my kids have made for me. πŸ™‚

Definitely a bookmark person. Since we are active participants of the summer reading programs at the library, we have tons of funny library bookmarks around the house. And sometimes, I am lucky to find a bookmark with sentimental value in one of my older books. Sadly, I usually end up simply using a paperclip to mark my page.

I love a bookmark, I have a weirdly large collection of them – including ones I’ve had since I was young.

I used to turn the corners down before then, but it doesn’t feel right to do that any more.

I almost never use a bookmark. Like you, I enjoyed being able to just know where I was when I was younger. Now, I just can’t get in the habit of using a bookmark and I don’t need one enough to work at it. I’ll sometimes grab a random piece of paper to mark my place, but I almost never remember to put the same marker back in my book next time I set it down!

I never used bookmarks as a kid, but now I can’t live without them. I hate wasting time trying to find my place, and it’s fun to pick out a bookmark that matches the book I’m about to read.

I absolutely need bookmarks! Lol. I can’t even remember the page I was on if I accidentally closed the book without putting a bookmark in. I usually use pictures or pieces of paper I just happen to have, but my future father-in-law got me this cute bookmark from Cancun and now I’ve just been using that.
